Did you know Women’s Equality Day is August 26th and a local business woman is making sure Hawaii Island will have a very rare and valuable opportunity to commemorate it?
I am very fortunate to call Aesha Shapiro, founder of Ladies Artisan Market, a friend, but also a business partner with our Best of Kona Festival. In honor of Women’s Equality Day, Aesha reached out to our women elected leaders to help encourage more women to participate in local and state politics. We are in a time of change and need strong, compassionate and intelligent leaders. Hope to see you on August 25th at 7 pm!
Ladies Artisan Market to host Virtual Talk-Story with Hawaii Island State Representatives in honor of Women’s Equality Day
Ladies Artisan Market leaders know the importance of electing more women to public office and thus gathered and invited an all-female panel of Big Island State Representatives to participate in a free, non-partisan, live Zoom event on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 from 7:00-8:30pm HST. The Virtual Talk Story will host State Senator Laura Acasio of Hilo, Senator Joy A. San Buenaventura of Puna, State House Representative Nicole E. Lowen of Kailua-Kona, and State House Representative Jeanne Kapela of South Kona/Ka’ū in a moderated discussion for women only.
Shannon Matson, community organizer, business owner and former candidate for State House in Upper Puna/Volcano, will be moderating this event that will cover topics such as:
What is it like being a female-identifying public servant in Hawai’i at the State level? Challenges and triumphs they’ve experienced? How can more women can get involved in the process to make positive change in local politics? Why do we need more women in public office?
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panel and be part of the conversation.

Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.
Ladies Artisan Market, LLC, founded by Aesha Shapiro in 2016, is a Hawai’i Island based, female-owned business that creates opportunities for women through empowerment, education, events, and networking. In January 2021 LAM officially launched the Whole Business Woman Academy, its membership-based monthly module business education program for women.
