Kona Orchid Society Spring Show and Sale

Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Kona Orchid Society Spring Show & Sale is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 13 inside and out at the Makaeo County Pavilion at the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area. Admission is $2 cash and includes a host of educational offerings. The fun includes a display of blooming orchids by club members and a sale presenting a wide selection of healthy plants from Hawai‘i Island growers. In addition to numerous orchid varieties, choose from cactus, succulents, air plants, bonsai, protea, fruit trees, exotic tropicals, water plants, herbs, vegetable starts and bedding plants. Jams, jellies, arts and crafts and high-fire functional stoneware will also be sold. Four food vendors will be on site offering tasty local favorites and free boxes will be available while supplies last to carry purchases. Attendees are invited to talk story with growers and on-site master gardeners for tried-and-true growing tips.

Molly Murphy of Plant Pono presents an informative display covering invasive plant species, and will guide attendees on the right (“pono”) planting choice for their landscape. Other educational offerings include:
• 10 a.m. – Melody Euaparadorn of the University of Hawaii’s Hawaii Ant Lab will discuss fighting little red fire ants.
• 11 a.m. – Orchidist Keith Kaufman demonstrates basic plant culture and repotting orchids.
• Noon – Phoenicia Zeller delves into landscaping with orchids and answers questions.

Big Island Art Fair

Held at the Kahilu Town Hall (Next to Parker Ranch Center in Waimea). Fair Hours: Thursday, May 11th 10:00am – 5:00pm Friday, May 12th 10:00am – 6:00pm Saturday, May 13th 9:00am – 4:00pm. Fun Fine Art Event. Family Friendly. Local Art for Sale. Demonstrations, Contests and Prizes!  This month the Artists are competing in the “Water Art” Contest: Art that depicts the magical essence of water! Come vote for your favorite and help an Artist win $250! On Friday at 4:00pm a lucky fair visitor will win $100 to spend at the Fair!

Honoka’a Western Week

Honoka’a Western Week rides into town with a roundup of activities that celebrate the paniolo heritage of Hamakua.On Friday the 19th, come to Honoka’a Peoples’ Theatre for a favorite Western movie followed by line dancing for everyone till 9 p.m.

Visitors are invited to put on their best boots and Stetsons, and stroll on down Mamanae Street to enjoy the decorations and take shots at colorful “photostops” designed and painted by local artists. Look for an epic block party with dancing in the streets, a day-long Saddle Up Saturday with vendors, food booths, cowboy games, music, silent auction, and more. And don’t miss the Saloon Girls and Cowboys Got Talent contest. Western Week concludes with the Hawai’i Saddle Club Scholarship Rodeo, Sunday-Monday. Kamuela Philharmonic Pops Concert

Come to the Kahilu Theater in Waimea to enjoy a musical treat! Since this concert falls on the weekend of Armed Services Day, a unique blend of light, famous classical works and beloved selections from both stage and silver screen with a very Americana will be performed, including famous works by George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, John Williams, Leroy Anderson, Henry Mancini, Victor Lopez, Calvin Custer, and more! Get ready to sing along to your favorite tunes and enjoy a musical experience that transcends generations. Some of Hawai‘i Island’s finest musicians, including the Philharmonic’s concertmaster, Ursula Vietze, and local powerhouse vocalist, Binti Bailey, will be featured.

Kokua Kailua Monthly Stroll

Kokua Kailua, the popular monthly village stroll on Alii Drive, happens one Sunday each month from 1 pm to 6 pm. Kona’s Historic Kailua Village closes to vehicular traffic and becomes a festive, pedestrian-only outdoor marketplace that makes for a fun family-friendly day. Leashed dogs are welcome to stroll too. Kokua Kailua stretches from Kailua Pier through Historic Kailua Village to Hualalai Road. Highlights include nearly 100 vendor booths showcasing the work of local artisans and crafters, musicians, and merchants offering a fantastic shopping experience and delicious dining options.
