Whisky and Poetry Salon Makes It’s Debut At Gertrude’s Jazz Bar

WhiskySalon
Did you know that today, March 27, is International Whisky Day and in keeping with the “spirit” of the day, 365Kona is helping promote the Whisky & Poetry Salon, on Monday April 16th at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar from 6:30-9:30 pm. The Whisky and Poetry Salon is a popular and long-running celebration of spirited words coming our way from California to Kona for a Big Island spring vacation! Come enjoy whisky, words, and light bites while enjoying the sunset and ocean view!

“No prior knowledge of whiskey is necessary to attend the Whisky & Poetry Salon!” assures host Kim Ohanneson, a Certified Whisky Ambassador and the Salon co-founder who will host the evening.  “This is a very accessible event. Everyone is welcome from the whiskey curious to the whiskey enthusiast. We’ll sample five whiskeys from around the world so guests will have a chance to try a wide range of flavor profiles to find a favorite or discover something new.”

Guests will also have a chance to compare the whiskeys with Hawaiian Moonshine: a spirit produced by Island Distillers in Honolulu. Hawaiian Moonshine is descended from the infamous Hawai’ian okolehao, which was banned twice and loved by kings and commoners alike. Kim will explain how Hawaiian Moonshine differs from the evening’s other featured spirits and will also share nosing and tasting education and brand history.

Another touch of authentic Hawaii will be provided by storyteller/”Pidgin poet” Bradajo (“Brother Joe” a.k.a. Jozuf Hadley), a third generation Kama’aina from Kauai who has worked within the medium of Hawaiian Pidgin English for over 30 years. The unique grassroots soul talk of a multicultural Hawaii, Pidgin is traditionally an oral language where the passing of knowledge occurred by word of mouth.

“Highlighting new and established poets for those outside the spoken word community has been one of the main missions of the Whisky & Poetry Salon since the beginning,” notes Kim. “We’ve featured everyone from teen poets to street poets to national slam poetry winners to Luis J. Rodriguez: Poet Laureate of Los Angeles. Listening to Bradajo is a mesmerizing experience,” Kim continues. “To me, his voice evokes an older Hawaii when culture and nature were more entwined. We are thrilled and honored to have Bradajo as our feature poet.”

Additionally, guests (21+) are invited to bring a poem, original or not, to read in a candlelit circle. “We want to trade you whisky for your words,” says Kim. “One of my motivations for starting the Whisky & Poetry Salon was to provide a creative, literary community for people who don’t necessarily think of themselves as either of those things. We provide a very relaxed, low-key atmosphere; there are no mics, no bright lights, no need to memorize your poem. You can read from a book, you can read from an electronic device…guests have even read poems they scribbled on their wrist! And short poems are welcome. In fact, we encourage brevity! Come drink poetry with us!”

The Whisky & Poetry Salon – Kailua Kona will take place at cultural hot spot Gertrude’s Jazz Bar, which will be providing light bites. $45 tickets are available at: http://www.whiskyandpoetrysalon.com/
